2/29/24 A Personal Reflection

The photo below was one of many I created as part of this personal project to learn more about my heritage, as well as, share with others information about Black History.

Every 4 years Black History Month is recognized for 29 days instead of 28 according to the Leap Year cadence. May I encourage you to consider that everyday is black history because each and every day we exist, we learn, we grow, and contribute to society like any other race.

Black History Month was not created to isolate but celebrate the many contributions of people that look like me. For that, I am grateful since prior to the establishment of the week, and then month, our history wasn’t often shared beyond our family tree while we were often taught about other’s history.

Look Around And See Every Day Is Black History

“Look Around and See Every day is Black History February is a reminder that history was created by men and women who look like you and me. ” Tomeria Jordan

According to history.com, "Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans." Blackhistorymonth.gov noted that Carter G. Woodson "believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice." Since 1976 in the USA Black History Month has been designated and celebrated in the month of February.
